“49 Days” (49 일) is probably a perfect example of how a drama’s story can be flawed and yet still be highly entertaining. The writer did a good job of keeping me on my toes with all the unexpected twists and turns that 20 episodes seemed almost like a breeze.
It was peppered with a couple of blemishes like the unbelievably immature motive by the two villains and the appallingly unprofessional doctor who divulges client information on a random stranger, to name a few. But these are easily overlooked in a well-acted series and “49 Days” is lucky to have a strong cast of actors who played their roles quite effectively. Ironic that the last episode had to be the one that felt tiring to watch, as it obviously tried to steer away from the cliché but failed in its attempt for an unconventional but satisfactory ending. Perhaps, the culprit is that tricky use of a “major” twist to end a story when you should be tying loose ends hence, making it seemed unnecessarily rushed.
For notable character, I would have to choose Bae Soo-bin’s Kang Min-ho. He was irrationally antagonizing everyone about 90% of the time but unlike the rest he was the only one who had more than one facet to his role. Plot-wise I’m inclined to like antagonists written with a certain degree of vulnerability because it reminds us that unlike cut-out board paper, villains are human too.
This drama’s strongest suit is its actors (Kang Ah!) and the fact that each of their roles had an interesting story to tell. Stories that are worth your 20 hours. Ok, maybe 19. ; )
Melo Melo Melo Melodrama
The process is nice, seeing how Ji Hyun (Nam Gyu Ri) went through of being a soul, and going through Yi Kyung’s body (Lee Yo Won) everyday. Though it was saddening at some points, it’s a good drama considering the amount of romance and betrayal’s and friendships in the plot.
Definitely a *must watch* for ppl who love melodramas & romance (maybe not so much on romance)
