Knowing that “Athena 아테나 (전쟁의 여신)” was a spy drama, it was inevitable to expect that asses will be kicked, bombs (and missiles too) will go off and blood will be shed. The one thing I did not expect was with the 20 grueling action packed episodes, there was not a single twist that blew me away or surprised me at all. Everything was disappointingly predictable as clockwork. I was thankful that the bad guys’ creativity & persistence on getting their death-wish done kept the series’ adrenalin going but I was hoping the good guys could’ve done more than just be mere sitting ducks. What kind of elite anti-terrorist agency gets taken down consecutively by the same group in their own territory?! Apparently, they haven’t heard of contingency or common sense (!!!). The cameos for Kim Seung-woo and Kim So-yeon were wasted with the dormant roles they were given. Though the writing was sadly way below expectation, the drama is saved by the cast’s superb acting. The fact that it was led by two of my favorite actors is a definite plus. As much as I love Jung Woo-sung, this series was all about Cha Seung-won who undoubtedly majors in badass. How great it would’ve been if it ended in that scene where CSW is shot to death by the woman he loves and the latter shooting herself in front of him. Not that I savor tragic but that would’ve been a poetic ending given the gruesomely tainted life that they led together. Instead she survives and it’s happily ever after for her and JWS. Boo!!!
You could say that you should watch Iris first then only watch Athena. Like many people they all say that Athena is much better in the (acting skills), but Iris had a better chance of scoring high ratings as it was the first kind of this genre. This drama is not that good (even though there are awesome actors in there), but I guess you won’t waste that much of your time watching it….
