Can “detoxification” work for dramas?
The impact the “idol invasion” has had on the J-dorama landscape over the last decade (not to mention the impact it’s currently having on the Korean TV industry, with people like Lee Soo-Man, Park Jin-Young and Kim Gwang-Soo commanding as much influence and power as top industry executives) is as obvious as it is painful to witness. Shows which in the mid to late 90s would have been perfectly acceptable are now contaminated by hordes of Johnny’s vermin, just as spurious and damaging to the overall quality of the product as a locust swarm would be to luxuriant crops. For an industry with so much behind the scenes potential, so much history and opportunities to take advantage of Asia’s richest narrative background, what we’re being offered today is little more than slim pickings, 2009 having been one of the worst years for J-dorama in recent memory.
Leave out a predictably brilliant turn by Abe Hiroshi, elevating 白い春 (Shiroi Haru) a few notches above the norm, and curious overachievers like JIN-仁, and you’ll once again find out that the sole remaining bastions protecting Japan’s TV drama legacy are the often maligned NHK and WOWOW, which is finally starting to show its teeth with the Renzoku DoramaW format. If NHK took top honors in 2007 with their masterpiece ハゲタカ (Hagetaka), WOWOW followed up a year later with Inoue Yumiko’s formidable パンドラ (Pandora), but the battle in 2009 was even more interesting. The odd show out was certainly MBS’ exquisite 深夜食堂 (Shinya Shokudo) and its mix of food porn and wacky slice-of-life situations, but fighting for best show of the year were two shows by WOWOW – 空飛ぶタイヤ (Soratobu Taira) and 隠蔽指令 (Inpei Shirei) – and two by NHK.
While 官僚たちの夏 (Kanryotachi no Natsu) deserves plenty of attention on its own, the real gem of 2009 is 外事警察 (Gaiji Keisatsu), a relentlessly dark and ridiculously badass antidote to asinine “quasi-24″ abominations like ブラッディ・マンデイ (Bloody Monday), but also a pretty classy production which shows NHK can truly make a mark when it wants to – albeit they’re often all too happy to continue bastardizing their taiga legacy for that automatic 25% instead. Starring Watabe Atsuro – in his best perf since 2001′s 北条時宗 (Hojo Tokimune) – as the top dog of a mysterious and elusive top secret organization like the Foreign Affairs division of Public Safety, Gaiji Keisatsu banks everything on suspense and the war of nerves which ensues before the action starts, in the same exact way Hagetaka made mergers and acquisitions appear like some kind of Shakespearean war of bravado and political machismo. There is no black and white here, no villains nor heroes, just shades of gray and Machiavellian motivations, leading people to choose one action over another, with all the consequences which ensue.
It is WithS2′s tentative, after subbing Hagetaka, Prisoner and Shinya Shokudo, to continue our “detoxification” of the J-dorama fandom, by eliminating the cancer at its root. No idols, lazy literary adaptations with the same artistic merit of an amoeba, and no shallow cutesy targeted at teenagers, but raw and unadulterated storytelling quality, delivered by real actors and produced by professionals who still listen to their artistic conscience. It’s a small step (show, as always, recorded ratings around the 5%, and has largely been ignored online, be it at home or abroad), but someone has to take it…

detox! detox! thank you X, Julier and the rest.
Thanks Mister X and Julier for completing this – it truly is an outstanding drama & I recommend everyone to watch!!
Wow! I dont say that very often, but THANK YOU Mister X and Julier and Your fantastic 4 team for bringing Gaiji Keisatsu from across the straight. A real Gem.
Yes!! Thanks MisterX, julier and mily2, ay_link.
Thank you so much MisterX & WITHS2 for all the hard work you put in this great series!
OMG, I just saw episode 4, log in here and see the subs for episode 5, thanks!!!
Oh yes this series is just terrific. Thank you so much for ep5 subs!
Hi, by far the best intro I ever read, man you just rule!! I agree with you, the last jdrama I saw was Shiroi Haru, but only for Abe Hiroshi, jdrama is decaying with those so-called actors. This jdrama is so dark and keeps you wondering what’s next, thank you so much for the subs.
Rumors suggest that pigs will fly adorned by red ribbons before I even fart in a Lee Byung-Hoon drama’s direction. They seem to be true.
Thank you MisterX & S2Crew for completing this fantastic series! See their in the can and pending upward.
Rumor has it, that MisterX will help Mrs Korea on Dong Yi. It hasn’t been reported on TMZ yet. So you knows. Everyone please stay well as summer is upon us. Thank you
X
I like it. thank you for four. detox is it going well?
Nice some more Gaiji Keisatsu. Thank you very much MisterX/WITHS2 for ep4 subs!
thanks for the subs MisterX!!!
Hm, was wondering where I can get direct dl links to the 1280×720 divx version.
I’m very much inetersted in this drama ^^
Thank you for the subs!!
on ep. 3 subs, is there an editing error on the link? the 1280p subs link seems tied to the 704p? or are the subs the same for both?
Thanks for subbing this drama. I looking forward to watching it when I’m less busy.
Thanks so much for subbing this series. I watched it already when it was first released but I didn’t understand any of it. I am a fan of Watabe Atsuro because of his amazing acting skills (i.e. Keizoku (Cold Case) – another gem in an idol-ridden industry). I’m currently re-watching this again, thanks to you guys at WITHS2. Thanks again!!
Yes this is really nice change from all those kdrama sob stories.
Thank you MisterX & WITHS2 for ep3 subs!
love the detox idea. i got tired of watching subpar idol-frenzy j-dramas of late (they are always the only ones subbed) and that’s what led me to kdramas, which sadly is slowly taking the same turn. of course i’m just generalizing on both, but this is definitely a great idea. rarely can you find a hidden gem of a j-drama that is subbed. thank you!
one can feel how lonely Sumimmoto Kenji is. To do his job, he must be very deceitful, even to his colleagues and family…all to his own.
a gem indeed. thank you for subbing this..
Thank you! <3
Thank you so much for subbing this drama!
I just finished the two episodes that were released. OMG! You are absolutely right. This is such a hidden gem, a drama that’s not only outstanding by J-drama standard, but definitely comparable to the best that was produced by HBO or BBC. It was that good.
So please continue your detoxification process. I need it. I usually put Hagetaka in ‘To-Watch-Later’, but if that drama is as fantastic as this one, then, I need to push it to ‘Must-Watch’. Thank you for subbing both.
Thank you, I’ll be waiting a completion of the project, but thank you for your efforts! More hardcore!
Thanks for this drama !
Wow…
That intro/critique…
Now, I’m going to have to watch this…
Nice ep2 subs! Thank you very much MisterX for subbing some japanese series too!
as the intro states…
- Hagetaka
- Prisoner
- Shinya Shokudo (VIA exclusive)
wow i didn’t know that withs2 sub japanese drama… what other japanese drama that withs2 subbed? i read lots of good comments about this drama, so i can’t wait to watch this. thank you for subbing this!
Thank you Mister X I can’t wait to watch this show!
It’s a VIA project, that’s why you don’t see it there.
Thanks WS2 for subbing this.
withS2 subbed Shinya Shokudo? may i have the link pls.. i checked it under project (finished project) but cant find it.
MisterX I am forever grateful for your effort to bring quality dramas to us. For making it possible to enjoy great performances and above average dialogues in dramas that are worth every minute spent watching. Shinya Shokudo is my favorite but I also enjoyed Conspiracy in the Courts. It is not enough that you sub great dramas for us, you have to go and write intros that are so insightful it puts the drama into a whole new perspective.
I know that many share my feelings so on behalf of many I thank you profusely for taking the time to identify and bring to us the best of the best in drama. Thanks!! Thanks! Thanks!
Thank you Mr. X for the intro – without it I might have passed up this drama. I had been hesitant that it might be a wannabe serious jdorama (I’m still stuck at ep 2 of Bloody Monday 1st Season – that is even though I like Miura Haruma!). I don’t mind eye candy dramas, but going long without substance can make anyone crave something more. Thank you for adding a healthy choice for our viewing diet!

The d-addict torrent link were almost dead when I checked the other day…
D-addicts link down here.
And… uhh… It’s our FOURTH J-dorama. And not the last. Detox~
Thank you so much… but err… where can I get the raw files? I love this kind of J dramas. Is this like Abe Hiroshi’s Shinzanmono?
I’ve been watching jdorama for roughly half of my life but the recent idol-infested ones just make me pause the video every half minute to cringe at its less-than-acceptable acting.
For me, casting a sub-par actor as a side character to pull in the ratings is understandable, but to go all out with pretty faces that have been proven to be unable to act just makes me sick of the whole scene.
Picking up this series after a gigantic dorama-hiatus in support of the “detoxification” move. Keep it up, and many thanks for all your hard work!
Mr. X, thank you very much for the excellent intro and the subs. A hint about raw files would be very helpful.
I’m so shocked! Wow! WithS2 doing a jdorama! Ehhh! Thank you so much for putting this on your radar. I really hope that you do some more very good quality jdramas. Thank you.
thx for subbing the japanese dramas and i hope withs2 will resume 2 subbing the jdramas =DD
by the way:
i’ve found the link @d-addicts: http://www.d-addicts.com/forum/torrents.php?search=Gaiji+Keisatsu&type=&sub=View+all&sort=
ENJOY!!!
What a piece of critique you’ve typed up there. I’ve watched this dorama, and I fully agree that this is one gem undiscovered by the online community. With it being subbed, I hope more will get to watch it. Demo, not all doramas boasting an idol in the cast deserved to be lump into one big group of ‘corrupted shells’. There are noteworthy ones that are above the average of all of Asia’s dramas combined. Some more for the plot, some for the acting, some for the whole package, and some just for entertainment and fun.
where can we get the raw files for this?
thanks for the subs…
sanQ misterX..so surprise
Am super excited that you are subbing this! Didn’t think anyone would sub this since no one really mentioned it on the online subbing community. Also, thanks for subbing Shinya Shokudo as well!
i really like your intro and couldn’t agree more with you! I haven’t watched a japanese drama in a really long time, but I’ll take your word for it that this drama is different from the typical idol infested jdramas seen today.
Thanks for your hard work!
I downloaded this drama without expecting anyone to sub it- it looked too interesting to just pass by! -So thank you so much for taking up this project; it would have been a while till I could watch it with my beginner’s Japanese skills.
Thank you, Mr X!!! After Shinya Shokudo I am your fan for life. Did not know about the earlier dramas you mention, but must now look for them. So glad you have taken up this burden of detoxification. Do keep up the good work.
Wow special jdorama project from MisterX. This looks very interesting so thanks alot for ep1 subs!
