Gaksital is a famous manhwa set in the 1930s, during the Japanese occupation. The hero, Lee Kang-to, is known as ‘Gaksital’ because he wears a mask to hide his face — one of those traditional play masks, specifically the rosy-cheeked one reserved for the female role, aka the bride. He’s an unassuming young man in real life, but when he dons his superhero mask, he fights injustice and rights wrongs during one of the darkest periods of Korea’s history…

Hancinema:
This program features smart actions of a nameless Korean hero during the Japanese colonial rule in the 1930s, who punished the villains ruthlessly, giving hope and consolation to the Koreans.

The program is a story about a man who chose to go the way of a nameless hero and had to give up his love as invaluable as his life in the turmoil of history, and a woman who loved a man braving death by living unhappily but cherishing an imperishable love.

The drama depicts their beautiful love story.

The drama also shows two men, a Korean and a Japanese, who share friendship and their fate, but have to stand against each other in a sterile plain in Manchuria to kill each other. It is a great tragedy for one to have to kill his close friend.

Based on the comic “Gaksital” by Huh Young-Man – first published in 1974.
First script reading took place at the KBS Annex Building in Seoul on February 3, 2012. About 40 actors and actresses gathered including Joo Won, Jin Se-Yun, Park Gi-Woong and Han Chae-Ah.
Budget for the drama is approximately 10 billion won ($9 million USD).
