Gumiho is one of those scary Korean folk tales where a nine-tailed fox, disguised as a beautiful woman, seduces men, but kills them for their liver. So with that thought, I thought the start of this drama had an interesting twist. A Gumiho who wants to be human so marries a man and bears a daughter (Yeon Yi). Unfortunately, her husband unknowingly betrays her. Your heart immediately reaches out to this supposed evil, mythical creature who only wants to protect and care for her daughter.

The make-up, especially when Gumiho and Yeon Yi are transformed into the fox-beasts, are sketchy. The fight sequences are poorly executed and the wire work doesn’t leave me in awe but in pain, because it looks so awkward. However, this is why I enjoyed the drama in the beginning. It looked like all the right ingredients for a cult hit.

The storyline moved quickly to the dilemmas. One child must die so that the other child may live. A parent willing to do anything for the love of their child. A woman having to choose between saving her child at the risk of losing her husband. Morals vs. sympathy.

Unfortunately, this drama ran for 16 episodes and it dragged and dragged. There were chase scenes after chase scenes. Scene after scene of characters not being able to make a concrete decision. I didn’t care if that character was good or bad, I just wanted them to make a decision and follow through. It had a I-can’t-live-without-you storyline, but it involved the young children/tweens so it was hard to believe and I found myself a little uncomfortable.

The actors were good. The child actors were a little stiff in the beginning with the Saeguk-style language, but soon they commanded the screen. The older actors were great but, no fault of theirs, seemed to get exasperated (and a little confused) with the characters. Is my character suppose to be evil? Good? Vengeful? Insane?

If the drama only had about 4 or 6 episodes, I think it would have made the story and characters tighter. It started off as a story about Gumiho, but somewhere along the way, that theme got lost. Only when it got to about the last 2 episodes, did it seem to try to bring the Gumiho theme back, but by that time it seemed contrived.

While this drama definitely delivered some creepy characters, none scary enough for me to sleep with the lights on. If the drama had stayed on the cult course, it could have been a good drinking game drama — still can be, one gulp for every time Gumiho yells “Yeon!”.

WOW this drama was definitely interesting. the acting was the highlight of the whole drama especially by the young kids. honestly the second half got a little ridiculous and carried away but the first half was just awesome. the storyline was so captivating but the “fight” scenes could be improved lol.
