BRIEF INFO:
Someone said there’s only two kinds of tragedy. The first, having no money. Second, having too much of it. The world is made of money, and money bears tragedies.

So began the best Japanese drama of 2007, in some ways reminding of the kind of mess we find ourselves in today. Because this crisis and its causes do indeed belong to those who had too much money, and those who had none at all, creating tragedies for many people. You rarely find a drama delving into such somber and in many ways depressing themes, particularly in Japan, where this kind of soup has been served for way too long, some will argue. NHK’s ハゲタカ (Hagetaka: Road to Rebirth) is a little triumph for the public broadcaster, despite the near absence of coverage outside Japanese shores, and rather vanilla ratings at home as well. Starring Ohmori Nao as Washizu, the president of an hagetaka fund, better known Internationally as vulture fund, his Horizon comes to Japan to literally buy them out on the cheap. Their M&A methods are ruthless, often at the expenses of a Japanese business model still too attached to what the Koreans call 가족주의 (familism), and the results aren’t pretty.

But something is hiding under this guise of hungry vulture for Washizu, as an indirect victim of the system itself, making him wake up and smell the reality surrounding him. Squaring off against him is Shibano (a wonderfully subtle Shibata Kyohei) a rather conservative yet idealist bank elite, and Nishino (Matsuda Ryuhei), plotting revenge against Washizu. Basking in financial jargon and with a refreshing no-bullshit approach to the proceedings, this little masterpiece not only benefits from nearly flawless writing, strong production values and top notch acting, but also the epic soundtrack of one Sato Naoki, the man behind パンドラ (Pandora)’s exceptional score. If you’re tired of idols stinking up the place, you couldn’t possibly do better than watching this gem. It’s sweet like Easter eggs. And you don’t even get cavities…

Dear MisterX, thank you for taking care for our spiritual cavity. And thank you for picking up such a gems, like Shinya Shokudo, that became my favorite.

You’re more likely to find it on livejournal, or alternatively you can check if these http://www.d-addicts.com/forum/torrents.php?search=hagetaka&type=&sub=View+all&sort= are still seeded enough.

    The shows I mentioned…

    - Summer of the Bureaucrats (TBS, I mistakenly listed it as an NHK show on the intro. Guess I was too shocked TBS produced something good). About a group of, well, bureaucrats partly responsible for Japan’s post-war economic growth. Really solid production, albeit a bit too right-leaning and flag-waving for an anarchist egghead like me. Was one of the many candidates for future subbing and I still haven’t entirely given up on subbing it, but it’s really interesting stuff, mostly well acted and with passable production values.
    - Shinya Shokudo. VIA exclusive, about a late night diner and its quirky patrons. Slice of life + food porn, as I said. I tend to favor darker stuff like this or Gaiji, but it’s the most fun I had subbing a show in a long time.
    - Inpei Shirei – financial drama from the writer of Kuitan. Weakest of the four I mentioned, but still pretty good.

I’ll be busy with K-dramas probably for the entire Summer, but we’ll come with some other J-dorama down the line, perhaps around Xmas.

Would you have any idea where I might find torrents for the raws or direct downloads? I can’t access clubbox accounts. Thanks in advance.

Of the series you listed earlier at Gaiji Keisatsu, I only recognized Pandora. When you have time, can you expand on the others listed or mentioned there? I’m really tired of idol dramas and still want to learn more of the language and cultures of Japan, Taiwan, and Korea.
Is there a better site than D-Addicts to locate some of these? They do tend to lean on things interesting to younger viewers.

I know you’re busy, so don’t expect a quick response, and will understand if you’re unable to help. Thanks for your great work so far!
