In response to mmym’s review. :)

First off, thanks for that detailed review. :) Now I want to watch this series again… hehe

I think that Grandma Sam Shin isn’t a perfect god. This drama shows the vulnerabilities of supernatural beings too, and gods/godesses can also be capricious or mischievous, right? I actually like the idea of a naughty, imperfect grandma-god rather than an uptight one.

Plus, I think those short conversations between grandma and Dong ju showed that grandma was glad that Dong ju learned something from Gil-dal’s “resurrected” form aka Mi Ho. So it’s still a good thing that Gil-dal is part of Mi Ho. Otherwise Dong ju wouldn’t have been drawn in and learned to appreciate humans…

I agree with you, Dae Woong’s grandpa is just adorable! Hehe… Loved this guy in My Girl too (although not so much in Witch Yoo Hee, but that’s because his role there wasn’t really good to start with)

Sometimes, I’m not sure whether I like something because I know it’s going to be really good and then, everything is conditioned to just follow along with my expectations. Or if knowing is irrelevant because it is good, plain and simple. I think I’ve had the latter for the most part of watching “My Girlfriend is a Gumiho” before the ending came and I snapped out of it to realize that though it was so darn great, it was still less than perfect unlike what I’ve wanted to believe.

Hopes for an amazing drama run sky high with the mere mention of the Hong sisters. This dynamic duo is extremely popular for their magic touch, or should I say pen, as they make instant superstars out of the drama leads they write for. Except maybe for Lee Seung Gi (who plays Cha Dae Woong) since, he can’t possibly get any more famous and well-loved than he already is. Although I was satisfied with LSG’s performance in “Shining Inheritance”, I wasn’t 100% convinced that he would completely win me over with a comedic role. After all, he’s never really done one full on. And though, I was more than ready to cut him some slack for about a quarter of the series, I most certainly did not expect him to blow my doubts straight away. What can I say; the guy had me at “Hoi, hoi, hoi.” What I love about Dae Woong is his growth as a character which was honed in perfect timing as he overcomes every challenge that he encounters. You get to bear witness as he turns his learnings and realizations to life-altering decisions that ultimately takes us to “why” Dae Woong is worthy of our respect. So, even if a good portion of the story has been focused on Mi Ho’s attempt to become human, we see a more realistic and relatable transformation in Dae Woong because what he went through is something any other person could possibly conquer minus the bead and tails. It’s remarkable how this series explicitly defied your usual hero with someone who’s more than a little rough around the edges, doesn’t sit along the sidelines, takes credit when it is due him but still equipped with a BIG loving heart.

Unlike LSG, I immediately knew Shin Min Ah (playing Gu Mi Ho) would do a fab job on comedy having acted on similar genres before this one like in her movies, “My Mighty Princess” and “The Beast and the Beauty”. Not only did she meet expectations but she raised the bar higher even with that momentary hideous perm. I’m sure everyone who watched that episode just made a mental note never to take hairstyling tips from a chicken shop ahjumma unless, you’re dating Dae Woong who appeared to oddly like it. It’s so rare hence, so cool to have a female lead that have no qualms about saying and showing how she truly feels. One who doesn’t allow herself to get pushed around, gets her man and even casually takes charge of dishing out sexual hints (watch out for the elusive “jakjigi” moment in episode 12) which can be considered extraordinary in the generally uptight Kdrama world. So, between her and LSG, this magic glue tagging gumiho would probably be raking in more advantage over this sudden rush of fandom compared to her already uber popular co-star.

On the other hand, No Min Woo (as Park Dong Ju) bumps off SMA to second place in the looks department. He’s a total flower boy and he literally outshined the beauteous gumiho herself with an even more perfectly styled hair and (isn’t it) sparkling, porcelain skin. Thanks to hi-definition tv you can even see through the pores of stars nowadays and technology helps you spell out the difference between a good skin and a perfect one. I knew it was just a matter of time before he grabs a better project after looking more delectable than all the food put together in his previous series, “Pasta”. I’m glad that he’s not sporting a ponytail though. Nevertheless, I was still surprised that in his next work he immediately gets to be a second lead at such a highly anticipated drama for this year. Playing a gumiho hunter role, I’m quite relieved he’s not casted as the typical second male lead that’s blindly in love with the girl, strays into the martyr zone for a bit, picks up angst by the tail end but still doesn’t get the girl anyway. Dong Ju is not romantic towards Mi Ho and he’s hardly a martyr too as he sparked the time bomb that would catapult our main leads to their tragic fate. His MO was built entirely from the inescapable shadow of his terrible past and in a fascinating way, getting the girl is not exactly on his to-do list either. Instead, his attachment to Mi Ho is solely to make amends for his past mistake by making things “right” for Mi Ho in the now. I was wickedly delighted from watching him constantly get miffed with Dae Woong who keeps on challenging and subsequently, altering the course of his plans and restoring his faith in people along the way. Min Woo needs to learn to act more naturally though (I think he has a similar dilemma as the actress Lee Ji Ah.) but the dude’s got some potential and with a face prettier than the entire female cast; he’ll probably be bagging a skincare CF sooner than a drama or movie.

It didn’t occur to me that Park Soo Jin (as Eun Hye In) would be an effective antagonist specially after seeing her act as Kim Bum’s gentle and affectionate first love in “Boys Over Flowers”. Apparently, the girl has got enough inner witch in her to conjure up trouble between the main leads even if her scheming ways all went kaput. Though she seems obsessed with the idea of a man being hopelessly in love with her, I like that she has ambition orbiting her universe and that her world does not necessarily revolve only around Dae Woong or his feelings for her. Her character even makes him realize the immaturity of his past decisions when Hye In signs up Mi Ho as her stuntwoman so, she can take the lead role instead. I took pleasure in Hye In’s innate persistence to question every little matter that happens around her and the clever means she makes use of to benefit from her discoveries or simply just to stir things up. Little Miss Sponge is made of solid doubt but this same quality of hers makes things more watchable and interesting for our two main leads. I know the Hongs always put their villains into good use, not only to show the usual contrast of good versus bad but also as a catalyst for the main leads to discover what lies within themselves through the experiences and situations they are thrown into by these mischievous characters.

Oh and how adorable is Woong-ah’s grandfather, Cha Poong (played by Byun Hee Bong). He runs into a lot of misconceptions about our dimpled hoi-hoi couple but they all turn out into funny antics and cool bonding moments. I also liked Woong-ah’s bestfriend, Kim Byung Soo (played by Kim Ho Chang). I couldn’t quite put my finger on it but I find his on-screen persona to be very refreshing. Mix in some over-the-top romance between Woong-ah’s aunt, fart happy Cha Min Sook (Yoon Yoo Sun), and Chow Yun Fat fanatic, director Ban Doo Hong (Sung Dong Il) and you’ve got the support stories rounding up the entertainment factor. Who knew medicated patches could be a romantic tool? “The movie with Min Sook as the leading role has already started filming in my heart.” Director Ban is dead serious about championing dorky love to the hilt.

Story wise, it was a brilliant idea to correlate “The Little Mermaid” with Mi Ho as both are special creatures who desire to belong, be loved and become human. The rising glass elevator and bubble scene puts a nice touch to it. Presented as characters who share the same fate in making the ultimate sacrifice for love, I’m glad at least one of them got her happy ending. A scene that I really found amusing and touching at the same time was when Mi Ho bought an ad standee as a gift for Dae Woong unaware that the actual cam is what he really wants. Mi Ho’s genuine nature and purity of feelings for Dae Woong was showcased well on this scene. Woong-ah was touched with this awesome display of affection. So was I.

The scenes between Byung Soo and Ban Sun Nyeo (Hyo Min) were ho-hum except for the three “unimaginable” wedding scenarios they were speculating on which I thoroughly enjoyed. Dong Ju’s stricken face when Dae Woong grabbed him in scenario 2 was priceless. Strangely, he seems to fit the “bill”.

Another one of my favorite scenes is the beginning of episode 11 where Dae Woong hugs vengefully possessed Mi Ho to stop her from harming Hye In. That particular moment was reflective of the kind of love and devotion they have for each other. It also clearly acknowledges the fact that as strong as the feelings they have are for the other person, they still managed to hurt each other beyond their control. I felt that this was pivotal for both characters because this episode was like a bend on the road. They arrived at a point where they see the change happening within themselves and in one another. Mi Ho confronts herself about her carefree and blatant ways around Dae Woong and suddenly becomes aware of the likelihood that he might have been burdened by her feelings for him all along. She also comes to terms with the reality that, as determined as she is about being human, she isn’t one yet. She painfully accepts her ability to bring physical and emotional pain to Dae Woong including those that she assumed she had inflicted on him already. On Woong-ah’s part, this is akin to a baptism of fire because with the countless threats Mi Ho has made to him, she’s never really done anything to hurt him and even now that she did, it was something that she didn’t cause herself. As Mi Ho’s sudden transformation unfolds in front of him, he did not run away like the old Woong-ah would’ve done. He sees Mi Ho changing right before his very eyes and effortlessly accepts it like it was the most natural thing to do. He knows he’s the reason behind the changes in Mi Ho and he takes on the responsibility like the real man he has become.

The most touching scenes (yes, more than one) would be on the day that Mi Ho loses her last tail, as well as her life. Lee Seung Gi was unbelievably incredible in both the fountain and gym sequences but most especially in that moment when Mi Ho was putting moisturiser on his sleep deprived face while he holds back his tears, puts up a brave front and manages to smile. My heart was breaking into tiny, little pieces for him. After all, no one can ever be prepared to say goodbye to the people they love and it is always hardest to the one who is left behind.

There were tiny loopholes in the story that were almost negligible but for some reason, I just couldn’t brush them off altogether. One example is when Dae Woong crossed out day 53 when Mi Ho had already done so earlier that same day. Another is Woong-ah who needed Mi Ho’s bead to fulfil his dream to be an action star but never really questioned why he had to hold on to it for exactly 100 days which ultimately led to the “you die or I will” situation. It just seemed inconsistent with Dae Woong’s noncommittal attitude and his nature to question things that happen to him before he accepts them. Who goes to sleep in a shirt and polo in full technicolor wrist gear? Don’t get me wrong, Woong-Ah IS my favorite character in this drama and perhaps, in a weird, ironic way, his Rainbow Brite tendencies and wavy perm all add up to his unique and unusual charm. Don’t worry, the prismatic bling blings grows on you.

Another one is the unexplored tale about Dong Ju who is actually half human and half (collagen?). What exactly is he capable of doing aside from having superhuman strength, making life harder for the two leads and having great gumiho sniffing skills? I didn’t need an inventory of his arsenal but I would’ve appreciated him more if I understood how he became half human and half something else and why he had to live his life the way that he did when he was with Gil-dal. The hunting knife Dong Ju carries around seem to take after its owner in its share of contradictions as it glowed only to indicate that the goblin was near when it should’ve been glowing throughout since Mi Ho was actually inside the car with him the entire time. However, when Mi Ho tried to touch it in episode 13 it glowed again. Personally, I think that when consistency takes a back seat in favor of convenience it suddenly becomes an issue of quality on my book. As for Mi Ho, why oh why did Grandmother Sam Shin tempt fate by creating her from Gil-dal’s bead? For a supernatural being, she sure doesn’t seem to be wary of superstition or at least ponder that Gil-dal’s wretched existence would somehow rub off Mi Ho. So, to make up for the mistake of resurrecting remnants of an ill-fated being, mystical grandmother decided that casting a spell and trapping Miss Second Chance in the painting is the way to go. How’s that for rubbing salt to a “stood-up” wound? Granny clearly lacks 20-20 hindsight and maybe, a heart too.

In spite of all these tiny bits and pieces of imperfection, Mi Ho and Dae Woong will undoubtedly go down in Kdrama history to be one of the (if not the) coolest on-screen couple ever. Hoi, hoi!
