This drama is very different from your typical kdrama.
It focuses more on character development and the building of relationships between characters. I felt this drama had minimal romance and lacked chemistry between the lead actors/actresses but that’s okay. Everything else made up for it.
The storyline is great and the characters are superb. It even throws some scenes with light humor in (cup of noodles. lol)
As a fan of romantic comedies, I was surprised how drawn I was to this action drama. I actually watched all 20 episodes (without fast forwarding).
If you have the time, I would definitely give this drama a shot. I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.
I first heard of this series from Dramabeans’ review. She loved it, and it seemed interesting to me so I decided to give it a try. What I didn’t expect was falling in love with this series. The music, acting, character development, and story were all amazing! I watched this series with my brother, and he just loved the drama and it’s characters as well. There is so much I have to say about this drama, but I’ll try to keep it spoiler free.
The series seems like a typical kdrama where the protagonist gets into trouble and loses everything. When released, the protagonist does his best to try and regain all that he’s lost, especially his ex-girlfriend. While he does so, this is where the series takes a turn from the typical kdrama. He meets the person responsible for his misery and decides to ruin him. Rather than being selfish and ruining Do Woo (the antagonist) for himself, Kim Shin (the protagonist), makes it his job to take Do Woo down so no one else will get hurt. The story mainly revolves around Shin and Do Woo going head-to-head with each other while they destroy each others plans. Perfect in his planning, Do Woo never expected the person he loves the most (his sister) would leave him and side with Shin.
I must say that it is refreshing to watch a drama with such intense acting. I usually watch a series to see how the story goes, but this was one time I really paid attention to the acting. Each and every character was unique and shined in their own way. The characters were all passionate in what they did. The character development was just amazing. I especially loved the people that Eun Soo and Do Woo became. Eun Soo was the girl who never spoke for herself and who helped everyone grew into someone strong and important, especially to Shin. She was the kindest person in the series while her brother (Do Woo – the antagonist) was the complete opposite. He simply wanted to achieve his life dream no matter what it took. However, that dream involved hurting a lot of people and Shin would not allow that to happen.
This drama was a perfect watch for me. If I were asked what I would fix about it, I would just say that I wanted more Shin/Eun-Soo screentime since I really loved them together. Aside from that, I love everything about this series. I love the soundtrack, the selection of actors, the acting, and the story. For 20 episodes, it went at a steady pace and the ending was perfect. I don’t think I was ever that satisfied with an ending of any kdrama series. This was definitely a different kind of series, and I’m glad I watched it.
Whatever you do if you do decide to watch the series, do NOT read spoilers because that will ruin the series entirely!
The most wonderful, yet underrated, drama of the year.
First off, ‘The Slingshot’ is labeled as a revenge story, so at first I was afraid it would end up like those makjang dramas that just make yo want to bash your head into the nearest wall.
Absolutely nothing like that.
The main character, Shin, was just a regular guy with no problems. He wasn’t the most responsible guy, but he had a girlfriend he loved, and a brother with a wife and two daughters he adored. All of this changes when his brother’s company goes down, and Shin’s brother dies.
From here it looks typical, I was even thinking ‘What’s next? The girlfriend’s going to have a brain tumor?’
But suddenly it gets interesting when Shin tries to kill the business man who bought his brought his brother’s good company down. And Shin goes off to jail, his girlfriend leaves him and becomes a hostess of sorts. She’s not a prostitute by any means, but a paid woman who job is to merely talk to business men when they come in for a drink. She figures its good money, even if she is throwing away her love for Shin. Shin meets an autistic genius in prison, who is bullied cause he has to wear head phones. Park Ki-Woong gives the performance of his life as the autistic Kyung-tae. He makes him human, and does not overact his disability. It’s a moving performance in itself, but when Shin befriends him, its even sweeter. (Be warned, this drama is full of friendly bromance). Shin makes some friends in prison, and is visited by (this is a twist) none other than the business man who hurt his brother’s family’s sister.
Seems confusing? Not reall when you compare that to a drama like ‘Don’t Hesitate’. Her name is Eun-Soo, her brother is Do-Woo. They are complete opposites as she comes to Shin to beg for forgiveness on behalf of her brother and father. Shin is skeptical, but Eun-Soo is sincere, knowing her brother did wrong. She does this every time it happens, and Shin is left wondering.
Shin and Kyung-tae eventually get out of prison and of course, seek revenge.
The revenge plot in this drama is not overwrought. In fact, its played out like an entertaining game of chess. Shin and is ever-growing team on one-side, Do-Woo and his shrinking one on the other.
Do-Woo is a complete creeper, but he’s deliciously acted by Kim Kang-Woo. He’s a villain that is acted believably. He cares about no one but his self-interest, and his sister. Yet his connection with his sister is one of the most intriguing aspects of the entire drama, because his possessiveness of her is almost scary. It especially complicates things when she starts siding with Shin, and he starts a relationship void of love with Shins’s ex.
It’s all apart of the game, and it grows more intriguing and addicting by the episode. I wish this drama had gotten better ratings, as it had an airtight script, solid acting, and no over-dramatics or horrible cliche plot twists.
The relationships between characters were a wonderful thing to get lost on, character development ACTUALLY HAPPENED, and for once I didn’t want to throw my computer into a wall and scream things like,
‘WHY THE HECK WOULD YOU LOVE HIM, HE’S TRIED TO PRACTICALLY KILL YOU A MILLION TIMES!’ and ‘WHY CAN’T YOU ACT!’ *cough* Boys Over Flowers *cough*
Other side-characters come into play and each act out their character perfectly to where it accentuates the plot and drama as a whole. From the bitter Korean-American who becomes Shin’s best bud, the ex con-artist, the crazy and selfish father of the yin-yang siblings (as I have christened Do-Woo and Eun-Soo), right down to the actual human-seeming gang member who helps Shin out.
In short, check this drama out. When you’re free, just watch the first 3 episodes. If you’re not hooked by its intelligence, or at least the beastly Kim Kang-Woo and Park Young-ha, by then, I don’t know what to tell you. Cause you’re missing out.
