“Best Love 최고의 사랑” is better than BEST. I’ve been watching KDramas since 2004 and 7 years after, a series like this is still hard to come by. It’s a wonderful thing that the Hong Sisters write drama scripts once a year, so it’s almost a guarantee to annually find at least one series worth committing to. “Best Love” brings together the best writers and the best actors possible for the job. Cha Seung-won’s outstanding and outlandish portrayal of Dokko Jin was primarily responsible for my laughing fit in almost every episode. I love his comic interactions with Ding Dong and his fervently loyal manager. Bromance at its best! Gong Hyo-jin was also a perfect fit for the has-been girl group leader role, Goo Ae-jung, as she is one of those rare actresses with a look that can evoke both sympathy and appeal when she means to. Yoon Gye-sang was just as effective and inadvertently funny as the unassuming doctor who falls for Ae-jung while he becomes a recipient of unrequited love himself from top star Kang Se-ri (played by Yoo In-na). Though the second leads didn’t really pose a real threat to the main leads (plot-wise), there was enough conflict in this drama where a superstar hesitantly but helplessly falls for the star of his Hallyu nightmare. The journey takes them, the people they love and a potato on a hilarious roller coaster ride from denial, to acceptance, to pain (the literal kind) and “worldwide” forgiveness. It was zany yet real, fun yet heartfelt. So for my re-watch rate on this drama, I’d give it the “best” seats because I’d love to watch it over and over again.
