the story was fantastic but in ending its quit hang ending.. i want part two so please do it.. taek yung youre so cute even the rest are so handsome.. go mi nam such a lucky girl…youve got a long hair.. waist
First off, what’s with the crappy name? No, I wasn’t referring to the drama’s title and I don’t blame you for thinking so. On that regard, the Korean title actually sounds and rolls off the tongue so much better than the English version. But I was actually talking about the band name, A.N.JELL. Mind you, it shouldn’t be pronounced as “angel” instead with emphasis on saying A then N then JELL. It’s supposed to be a shortened version of the word “archangel”. Yes, I can’t tell what the freakin’ difference is too.
Don’t get me wrong, I did like “Minami Shineyo 미남이시네요”. I just didn’t like everything about it. Trendy dramas such as this one are usually an instant hit but I’ve probably seen a lot of these sugary sweet stuff that I’m on the verge of getting a toothache. Either that or maybe I’ve just raised the bar higher for similarly themed series after watching “Coffee Prince”. YB felt somewhat mechanical to me. It had this very efficient way of prompting you when to laugh, smile, get excited, worry and yes, even when to get idle. In three words, it lacked spontaneity. I skipped the side story of Hwang Tae Kyung’s mutually alienated relationship with his mother because it was a little too sappy for my taste. The good news is that I did like enough of YB to offset those that I didn’t. Thanks to all four members of this “angelic” band including the fallen angel, Yoo He Yi.
It was no surprise that Jang Geun Suk is as effective as ever playing finicky band leader, Hwang Tae Kyung. He also got the chance to show off his singing abilities which were previously featured only on his films. Compared to his other dramas, YB was probably a walk in the park for him. So, accepting this role seem to be two steps back on his acting progression. On the other hand, it does show his versatility by stretching his tv acting palette from fusion saeguk (Hong Gil Dong) to heavy drama (Beethoven Virus) and now, comedy. Though YB failed to resurrect the JGS fanatic streak in me, it did show promise that what he’s shown so far is just the tip of the iceberg and there’s plenty more to look forward to.
If you’ve ever seen any of Park Shin Hye’s series then, you’re probably as relieved as I am to not see her shedding bucketloads of tears here. Well, she did spill a few in YB but it was luckily, far from the literally dehydrating dramas she’s had before. I can’t help comparing her to Yoon Eun Hye’s Go Eun Chan of “Coffee Prince” with the latter doing a better job of concealing her feminine side. Since Go Min Nyu grew up in a convent then, it becomes understandable that unlike Eun Chan, Min Nyu was struggling to play the part of her twin brother and her ignorance er innocence is to be expected. As much as our country have accepted metrosexuality in men, I’m inclined to think that we’re still far from having kkotnam guys as a norm unlike Korea and Japan. So as a non-Korean, I still don’t get how Min Nyu appear to pull off playing a guy simply by sporting a short hair and supposedly masculine clothes. But PSH skillfully steers your attention away from that tiny detail and instead makes you focus on how she inadvertently stirs up the lives of her three bandmates.
The same way Jung Yong Hwa who plays Kang Shin Woo reminds me of Hana Yori Dango’s Hanazawa Rui, Jeremy played by Lee Hong Ki also reminded me of Nakatsu from Hanazakari no Kimitachi e. Being actual boy band members was a huge help since, they both had the look and the voice making their characters almost real. Shin Woo was tolerant and placid, completely polar to Tae Kyung and predictably, they share only one thing in common by both falling for Min Nyu. It was quite frustrating to watch Min Nyu’s limitless ignorance coupled with Shin Woo’s insistent portrayal of the riddler to clueless Min Nyu. But he redeemed himself by giving Min Nyu a front row seat to his rare and sudden outburst of anger with the latter’s repeated though unintentional ways of unknowingly rejecting him. One of the few scenes I did enjoy was one of him “fabricating” the love story between him and Min Nyu which in reality is based from Shin Woo’s foiled attempts to confess his feelings for her.
As for Lee Hong Ki, it was such a delight to watch him play Jeremy. His vibrance and energy was contagious. He has an innate timing and adeptness for lightening up the mood as well as, letting it all out in that emotional bus ride he shared with Min Nyu. The transition from sorrowful to joyful Jeremy was abrupt but natural. Looks like Hong Ki’s got a bright, comedic future ahead of him. Although, I do wonder why the writer had to make him have feelings for Min Nyu too. His interactions with her were limited to a few less than romantic events so, the basis for his sudden confession seem too weak. UEE as Yoo He Yi was well suited for the role of a famous star hyped up to be an endearing celebrity but is in fact a witch hiding in fairy garments. The role fitted her so well it was almost like second skin. Performances of the four member band group should have been showcased more instead of that measly 3 minute glimpse.
Next to “Couple Trouble”, YB is my least favorite among the drama’s penned by the talented Hong Sisters. But it sure did gave me an excellent way to waste my 16 hours wisely.
One of my favourite, although after seeing the first episode, I wasn’t sure yet I’ll continue…
Yes,the Hong Sisters (the screenwriters) did it again, formulating a massive story idea that gains popularity after it is being aired. You’re Beautiful is a top notch drama but not original overall, it’s like a blend of Coffee Prince with a lil bit of Hana Yori Dango. The Hong Sisters are known for their memorable and quirky characters, such as Choon Yang, and they never left out those elements in this one. I ablosutely loved Jeremy, squeall!! and also Jolie!! The directing and photography were good as well as the actors, I know Jang Geun Suk won’t dissapoint me, he’s a GOOD actor, he’ll be the character, he managed to snap out of his boyish looks to be a bad ass band leader. Park Shin Hye is cute but she acts uber cute that didn’t approved on the screen for me, at the course of the series, the characters were pretty stupid, Go Mi Nam is obviously girl, the way she looks and the way she acts, that’s the missing in this series, Go Mi Nam’s manliness. The comedy are never missed out of this one, the locker scene is funny, where Go Mi Nam imagines that the naked male dancers are a bunch of innocent querubins. A Hong Sisters product will never be Hong Sisters product without it’s parody, every episode got a series of parodies, which I love. The potrayal of Manager Ma is quite good too, UEE’s character annoys me that proves UEE is a great actress. The Shin Woo character is so dull for me, feels like the “Ji Hoo’ character is being overused. One thing that made me feel bad about the series is the losing of excitement, as the story progressed it gets a little boring…anyways, good job to the You’re Beautiful cast & crew!
Thus far, this is one of my top favorite dramas I’ve seen. 98% satisfaction guaranteed.
Light, humorous, and entertaining to watch.
PLEASE HELP ME TO FIND LYRICS IN ENGLISH, or to understand the idea the song “You’re beautiful” is expressing!!!!
Thanx!!!
This is for sure the best Korean drama I have ever watched. beautiful cinematography , remarkable storyline, wonderful acting. everything in this drama invited me in <3 It never bored me & I never thought that they are using useless scenes in any moments. Music was so mesmerizing & played in the right place
and Tae Kyung character was super cute
Jeremy was a fruit candy. Shin woo was lovely. park shin hye also was a cutest dense boyish girl I have ever met.
recommend this drama to whoever wants to have a fresh air with a wonderful romantic comedy with heartwarming music
i luv this drama..when i saw it..it make me addicted to stay see this story till the end..i luv jang geun suk and go minam..but the story ending is a little boring.i hope it has conyinue for ending YAB
I’ve been a fan of Kdrama before. When i first saw this one, it didn’t catched my attention because of their silly poster and not-so-good synopsis. After finishing watching my current Kdrama during those time, i’m kinda like finding another one, and tried this one, i didn’t realize then that i’ll be caught in the “YAB fever”.
After watching the first episode the first thing that catched my attention is the cinematography. I like the color combination of everything in the drama. Refreshing to the eyes, color of their house, the sofas, tea sets, the view, their wardrobe, accessorties and everything for me its perfect. And the first episode makes me want to see the next and the next………….
The cast was perfect, it seems that that the character was tailor made for them. The Charisma between the 4 main character is undeniable, particularly GMN and TK. They are simply adorable, you will love them by their character making you hard to decide who to pick if your GMN. SBS made a powerful team, for this drama. After watching Jang Geun Suk (TK) and Park Shin Hye (GMN) performance i fell in love with this couple so much that i want more of them. Their scenes always makes my toe curl….
And the OST of this drama is so touching. I love it so much that i’ve listened to it everyday, i’m not a korean song lover by the way, but this drama makes me think twice.
After watching Your Beautiful i’m not watching any Kdrama again unless its JGS and PSH team up. Sorry guys but that’s how i love this couple they got me hook!!!!!!
Your Beautiful is the best Kdrama i’ve ever watched!! It made me smiled, laugh, angry and laugh again, then cry, freak out and cry, screemed and laugh again till the end (emotional overload!) that’s how i felt watching it. And I love every minute of it!!! the journey i have with TK, GMN, YH and JEREMY, and missing them so much.
it has been more than 2 weeks since i first watched this drama, and literally got hooked with it that i’ve watched it repeatedly since then. i’m here in vegas, and not even american idol 2010 could make me stop watching this. the OST is amazing, and even if i don’t understand korean, i love every song in it. YB is a feel-good drama, not heavy in the heart. The actors are all good and they’re so adorable. I’ve never had this thing about idolizing anybody, but to my surprise, i found myself googling about A.N. Jell members. I was really surprised that it didn’t rate well in Korea when it was first shown, so I tried watching Iris, the one that was shown at the same time to see if it was justified. Gosh, I was only in the first episode and i stopped. I’m sorry, but it was boring me to death. I’ve watched a handful of Korean dramas, and YB, by far, is the best. I like Lovers in Paris, too, by the way. But YB is the best of all!
I finished it! It was hard work, I stayed up till 5 am for 2-3 days and finished the entire series. I wish it was longer
This drama has such a good mix of drama, romance, and comedy. I hope there is a sequel, this is one of the best romantic comedies I’ve seen in a long time. Not to mention the lead actor is a fanastic singer. BUT, he isn’t really playing the piano for those who are curious lol. You can totally tell because when he is “playing”, sure his arms look like hes doing something, but the piano is played with sustained notes and his foot isn’t even moving the pedal xD That’s realistic-piano-playing-fail my friends. Also, it kind of annoyed me how Go Mi Nam is SOOOO oblivious to Shin Woo’s feelings. Sometimes I wonder if she’s blind or just really slow in the head lol. I’m definitely watching this drama again in the future
side note: I’m not really a fan of kpop, but this drama has a nice soundtrack, check it out
I haven’t finished this drama yet, but I watched 7 episodes in 2 days… enough said lol. So far this drama is great, its funny and highly entertaining. I would rate this drama at least a 9/10 (not 10/10 because some plot holes bother me lol). Way way better than Coffee Prince, I couldn’t stand that one, ARG. Almost as entertaining as Japan’s Hana Kimi! So far it’s kind of predictable, but still fun to watch! Go Mi Nam’s manager cracks me up so bad, he always has funny thoughts/ideas about what happens, like in the scene with the taser haha. also… OH MY GOD, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR! <— totally random english LOL.
This has to be one of my favorite dramas of all time! Not to mention it was one of my firsts; but the best by all means!
I cannot stop watching the series over and over. Geun Suk’s acting perplexes the mind because he is so gentle and sweet while all the other characters surprises viewers, like me. I only hated one character, but that is because the “Devil Fairy” acted so well that she made me hate her. I loved the main four characters most and by the end of it, I wanted them all to be together. The acting was superb and the sets and shots were amazing.
I am majoring in Motion Pictures, so this series came to me as a surprise. I loved the shots and cinematography and not five minutes after watching it, I wished to go to Korea. Amazing. I laughed, cried, and felt every emotion possible because of this series. Everything astounded me and the most phenomenal part of the whole series was that it was unpredictable. I did not know where any of the situations were leading, but now I want more of the relationships and more stories about girls dressing up as guys. There have been many stories like this one, but none can surpass it for me.
To be truth, i usually watch kdramas that my favourite idol/actor or actress is going to be casted in it. I watch the drama, You’re Beautiful because Lee Hongki is in it, and the storyline attracts me (: Im a fan of most Kpop group and im really curious about what this show will be showing its audience (behind the scenes etc..)
At first, i only focused on Hongki because he is my idol, but after watching this whole drama, im also a fan of Park Shinhye, Uee , Jang Geun Suk and Jung Yong Hwa. I’ve also introduced this drama to my friends, and they gave me feedbacks that this drama is amazing, funny, touching and sad. Every episode ends at exciting parts.. For example, Ep 2 ends where Hwang TaeKyung found out that she is a girl. The way the director split up the episodes, makes audiences want to watch more of it, cant wait for the next episode to come out.
When this drama was being aired, i waited excitedly for the next episode to come out. I like them acting out their feelings that made cry. When hwang taekyung cried at ep 15, its so real !
I really like this drama, and ive watched it for 3 times already (: Hope everyone who watched this will like it too ~~ !
A little while ago, I was totally obsessed by a wonderful drama named You’re Beautiful. I was also really annoyed by the “low” ratings, because this is a drama that every drama-lover should watch (and I am dead serious!). It was hard to wait a whole week for new episodes and while I was waiting, I was loudly singing along to the OST’s, which are truly great.
Whats so special about this drama is the way the script never seemed to bore me. The script is great. I’ve seen alot of drama’s, but there aren’t many that can make me laugh the way I laughed during You’re Beautiful. There are some moments in this drama that are just too funny to discribe!
The four ANJell members all have distinguished personalities. Jeremy is very cute and funny! Shin Woo is kinda to himself and a real gentleman, Min Nam is innocent and awkward and our Tae Kyung is arrogant but therefore very sexy *blushes*. Its really hard not to like any of them. They all act so very well. Such talented people all in one drama!
This drama just has it all. It has comedy, it has romance, it has those shocking moments where you just scream out a loud “AIGOOO” and it has detail – due to its awesome script.
If I had to point out what I didn’t like about this drama, I’d say that the end was kinda rushed. I think they had to add a few more episodes to give this drama the ending that it deserves, but who knows… maybe they’ll make a second season so that we can finally see what happens next.
I’ve already recommended this drama to at least 20 people, and they ALL loved it as much as I do. So if you’re in need of a very good drama, you now know what to watch. You wont be disappointed!
9/10 stars
P.s. PIGRABBIT FTW!
To be honest, I usually avoid watching Korean dramas because I have a certain bias against it. However, You’re Beautiful was an exception. This drama was the first Korean drama I have ever watched all the way through and finished as well. Not to be misleading though, this is not like my first experience with Korean media. I have finished around 8-9 Korean movies; most of which were good because I picked from selections that were highly praised.
I initially heard about You’re Beautiful from a friend. As a curious person towards movies and series, I decided to look up the drama. As a result, I discovered the soundtrack, which was apparently doing really well, in terms of sales. As a big fan of music, I decided to take a listen. Soon after, I decided to watch You’re Beautiful (clearly indicating how much I liked the soundtrack).
The storyline of You’re Beautiful is pretty simple, but is suitable. It is about a girl named Go Mi Nyu, who pretends to be her twin brother Go Mi Nam and joins a popular male band called A.N. JELL. During the way, she also attempts to find her mother, who left them when they were young. The story behind searching for the mother isn’t like extraordinary, but it effectively pushes the story forward as well as adding a little more interest.
Overall, the drama is pretty good. The acting/casting was excellent, as everyone was able to get into their character and showed incredible chemistry with each other. The emotional scenes were handled really well. I thought there was sometimes too much ridiculous scenes (mostly in the beginning) because sometimes it was either unrealistic or it did not help the plot/development at all. Other then that, it did well on both humor and emotions. The soundtrack is one of the best I have ever heard. I recommend this drama to everyone who likes romantic comedies. If you like idol dramas, then there is probably no doubt that you would like this. If you watch the first episode and like this drama, then you probably will like it all the way. If you don’t like the first episode, then try watching til episode 3 or 4, as it gets better and I did not like the first episode either.
Storyline: 6.5/10
Acting: 9/10
Music: 9.5/10
Entertainment: 8.5/10
Overall: 8.375/10
Let’s see..You’re Beautiful. What to say about this drama? It’s a laugh-out-loud, sweet, cute, quirky, and just everything mixed in between romantic comedy. If you’re looking for something cheerful, slightly refreshing, and “made my day” type of drama, then look no further because THIS. IS. IT.
A little info. about the main characters:
Park Shin-hye is Go Mi-nyeo who is a sweet and innocent, but quite slow (by “slow”, I mean..um, slow to catch on or just plain dumb) girl who has always dreamed of becoming a nun but along THAT line, she ends up pretending to be her twin brother, Go Mi Nam and becomes the new member of the band A.N.Jell (ANGELS! Haha, I got it) but is tangled up in a bundle of mess along the way..
Then you’ve got a guy who may not seem like he’s the happiest person in the world but trust me, Jang Geun-seok plays his role of Hwang Tae-kyung so amazing that he will definately, as they say, “grow on you”. Him AND his trademark facial expressions.
Next up, F.T. Island’s Lee Hong-ki is Jeremy. He’s the total OPPOSITE of Hwang Tae-kyung. He’s quirky, upbeat, and you’ll absolutely love him too!
Last but certainly NOT least, there is Kang Shin-woo who is played by Jung Yong-hwa. He’s calm and collected and kind. (Or in other words, what I tell my friend, he’s like the You’re Beautiful ver. of Ji-hoo from Boys Before Flowers). You’ll love him too! Pft, you’ll love ALL THE CHARACTERS. That’s how lovable You’re Beautiful is!
My first perception on “You’re Beautiful” was very wrong. At first, I thought only by glancing at the photos for the drama it was a mixture of look-a-like characters. To me, the main actress Park Shin Hye who played Go Min Nam/Go Mi Nyu resembled Yoon Eun Hye who played Go Eun Chan in 1st Shop of Coffee Prince. The rest of the cast members, Hwang Tae Kyung (Jang Geun Suk), Jeremy (Lee Hong Ki), and Kang Shin Woo (Jung Young Hwa) reminded me of other famous band members. Jeremy’s physical appearance somewhat reminded me of G-Dragon, and Hwang Tae Kyung resembled T.O.P. from Big Bang as well. Kang Shin Woo’s appearance also seems to resemble a famous person as well but I cannot figure it out.
I decided to try this drama by watching the first episode. To my very surprise, it was very humorous! After each episode, I anticipated the next because one episode came out each week.
The actors did a tremendous job and played their roles perfectly. Each episode grabbed me in and left me wanting more. I have never seen a drama like this before. The most creative and interesting part of this drama is that the scriptwriter made the main actress, Go Mi Nyu a nun. Thus, she never really experiences any interaction from the outside world until Manager Ma begs her to take her twin brother’s place for a little while. She finally agrees to switch places with her brother, Go Mi Nam. Go Mi Nyu’s mind is so innocent, and sweet that she thinks everyone is good and learns that life is not as what it seems outside the convent.
Go Mi Nyu is sucked into becoming a member of A.N. JELL. for her brother Go Mi Nam. She constantly has to watch out that her identity is not revealed or it will be bad news. While trying to keep her identity a secret, the suspicions grow and she is put through trails to prove she is a man. Each step of the way, Go Mi Nam’s friendship with each band member develops. She unknowingly has a crush and feels that it is unacceptable because she is a nun on the inside. Throughout all the trials and errors, Go Mi Nyu’s journey into the world was a success and she gained valuable friendships, love, and courage to do many different things. In this drama, there are too many hilarious moments that cannot be said in this review, it is best to watch the drama to get a better understanding.
My first impression of the drama was not very great, but by watching the first episode, it wiped out all negative thoughts and turned out to be a wonderful drama. My favorite part of this drama is when Go Mi Nyu always does the “pig-rabbit” gesture, and whenever she falls onto Hwang Tae Kyung or when Jeremy has “what if” moments thinking about Go Mi Nam. Overall, I rate this drama a 9/10 and I highly recommend this drama for those who want to watch a comedy, romance drama. Also, remember to keep in mind to “never judge a book by its cover.”
Me: I want a pig rabbit shirt but I haven’t written a review! Mother Superior, what should I do?
Mother Superior: Gemma… just go ahead and write one! Your review might just make it in time
(Spoiler free review)
To be completely honest, the only thing that kept me interested in the first four episodes was Jeremy. This character could have been extremely annoying but Lee Hong Ki portrayed him with just the right amount of cute and funny to keep me glued to my laptop.
By the fifth episode, Tae Kyung’s Snape with bangs hairstyle disappeared and I was addicted.
Overall, if you are into romantic comedies, you have to watch You’re Beautiful. Chemistry among the four main leads is great and the Hong Sisters just does not fail to make me laugh while you grow attached to the characters they created. By the end of the series, you will become a Jang Geun Seok and Lee Hong Ki fan. This is the type of drama that still makes me laugh when I watch it again.
But of course, this drama isn’t for everyone. If you are not into rom-coms, stay away. If you are tired of women pretending to be men while still looking like women, stay away. But I should tell you, this isn’t Coffee Prince. The cross dressing isn’t as big a plot here as it was in CF. If UEE’s eyes freak you out, watch it but FF through her parts. Though you might regret it coz she has some really awesome scenes.
And never, ever FF through Jeremy’s. You will miss a great performance.
When you finally think that the year 2009 will end without a trace, out pops out one of the best RO-COM (Romantic Comedy) of this year.
You’re Beautiful/You’re Handsome was a drama that pulled you right into it in the first episode, making you wait every week for the promise of new episodes. From the very first episode, the viewers are pulled into the fictional fan following of ANJELL, wishing they themselves can wear wings and cheer on their “Oppa’s”.
In this hit drama, actress Park Shin Hye plays cute and naive Go Mi Nyu, who helps out her twin brother, Go Mi Nam, by taking his place in the sensational band ANJELL. There she meets her bandmates calm & cool Tae-Kyung, sweet & kind Shin-woo, as well as fun & friendly Jeremy. Along the way she bonds with them and learns new things everyday but never giving up her brother’s dream as a musician.
I would highly recommend this drama for any one who enjoys laughter and love at the same time. And by the way, what other show would include popular entertainment parody, fanfiction, and of course “what might have happened” scenes?
(4.9/5.0)
If someone is looking for a comedic and sweet drama to watch, You’re Beautiful is the best choice. The Hong sisters wrote this drama about idol life, something everyone into K-pop is interested in. The story of the main character, Go Mi Nyu, who fills in for her twin brother, Go Mi Nam in the band A.N.jell. She has to hide her identity, but with a series of mishaps, she reveals her identity to the prickly grumpy lead singer, Hwang Tae Kyung. Since Mi Nyu came, he has been led into a series of unfortunate events, all leading to a close relationship… Mi Nyu and Mi Nam are orphans, and throughout the drama, Mi Nyu finds out more about her past and about real love.
Overall, I would recommend this drama to anyone who would listen. Out of five stars I would give 4.8, because it is literally the most entertaining drama I have watched so far- I have laughed, got angry, and cried a little, through the 16 episodes of You’re Beautiful.
My current addiction. This is another good Korean drama. It features the life behind the angelic looks of A.N. Jell, an idol group. The story revolves around Go Mi Nam(고미남)/Go Mi Nyu(고미뉴), a clumsy aspiring nun whose twin brother got accepted as a member of the famous idol group A.N. Jell. But because of certain circumstances, when her twin brother was about to debut in a group, he couldn’t be there so Mi Nyu had to pretend that she’s Mi Nam. Everything was going well at first but no secret can be kept hidden so as (episodes) days pass by Go Mi Nam’s adventure as a girl pretending to be a guy becomes difficult. Hwang Tae Kyung(황태경) is the clean freak, and snobby leader of the band who soon becomes Mi Nam’s closest “hyung” in the band. Despite Tae Kyung’s very strong personality, he and Mi Nam goes along really well especially when Tae Kyung discovers that she’s a girl. Kang Shin Woo (강신우) is the sensitive member who easily discovers Go Mi Nam’s true identity but because he wants to protect Mi Nam, nobody knows that he(Shin Woo) knows Mi Nam’s secret. Jeremy is the bubbly magnae(i think) of the group.
I really like this drama. I think it’s more fun than Boys Over Flowers. Maybe because I’m a fangirl so it gives me more insight about idol groups in Korea. Well I just finished watching Episode 9. Actually this airs in Korea on Thursdays and Fridays and last Friday, was Episode 12. I’m a bit late but it’s okay.. I think Episode 9 is one of the best episodes of YB so far.. I’m excited to know what’s gonna happen next. But I’ll watch the next episode tomorrow.
_____
i wrote this review while i was on episode 9. now i have finished the drama and it really was a fun and great drama.. i love the ending!
Cross-dressing, gender mix-up fans, this is the drama for you. Not since Coffee Prince has a gender-cross drama surfaced with solid writing, superb acting and overall cohesive aplomb.
The good-looking A.N.Jell cast: Jang Geun Suk (Hwang Tae Kyung), Park Shin-Hye (Go Mi Nam), Lee Hong-ki (Jeremy) and new comer Jung Yong-hwa (Kang Shin-woo) all deliver great performances.
The main story arc follows the relationship of Hwang Tae Kyung and Go Mi Nam with second male love interest, Kang Shin-woo vying for her affection. Throughout the 16 episode series there are plenty of hilarious situations, love tension and heartbreaking emotional conflict. Some lesser plot lines are present while not as essential, nonetheless contributes to the overall full-circle of the main plot.
The genre is romantic comedy with a PG-13 rating. Overall grade: A
This is the most recent drama I’ve finished watching. It will go up on the list of “those dramas I’ve finished in the least amount of weeks or days.” ^_^ I was drawn in immediately by Jang Geun Seok’s character (maybe it was his eye liner… it definitely wasn’t his hair at first^_^… hee hee). I think his acting definitely created this drama. Although Park Shin Hye’s character drew me in as well, I would had wanted to see a little more realistic acting in her character. I liked her sense of innocence (creating therefore the pig rabbit character) and I liked her dynamics with Jang Geun Seok especially when her character was shown giving him a hard time^_^ (singing the rabbit song), but there was just some thing lacking at times (the acting was more prevalent than a realistic character at these times).
This drama was not as relatable or realistic as other dramas, but the moral of the drama impressed on my mind through the scenes in the last episode, I found to be realistic and relatable, and I couldn’t help but to just be drawn in out of curiosity from the beginning of the drama when the different boy band characters began to develop.
I rate this drama a “Seven”… with a thought of rating it as an “Eight” but realizing I’m not sure who would be the one sitting next to me watching it^_^, so I think I’d just be watching my own reactions again. I have to say some parts I wanted to watch again just because it made me laugh the way that the screen writer had Jang Geun Seok’s character expressing himself (Sarcasm with a bit of charm^_^). Here’s an explanation of my WithS2 rating system:
10- just had some thing unique, not quite seen before in a drama, along with likable about it to give it a 10
9- would watch again and again (consider the fact that a favorite actor or couple may be featured^_^)
8- could watch again if watching it with some one that has not seen it before to watch their reactions
7- memorable and left an impression… too much drama or too long to watch again
6- worth watching once if can’t find some thing to watch
5- watched it and finished it because I started it and got quite far
4 and below- would not watch again or had to stop watching!
Honestly I think this drama’s overrated. Not to say, it wasn’t enjoyable!
It was cute, funny, it had a fairytale feeling in it and it leaves you feeling happy. Of course, it has all the cliche in this category of dramas, and it’s completely unrealistic, so if you’re into “serious” dramas I doubt this is a drama for you.
BUT, if you’re looking for a carefree drama, that will empty your mind off worries, then this is definitely it!
I’m just sad we’ve already seen all of these before. I think it has all the good points of other dramas, and this is what makes it so nice, unfortunately not unique, though.
I am totally inlove with kdramas. I want the way it makes me feel, in-love.
This romantic-comedy series will definitely make your year. I can say that this is my KDRAMA of the year!
BOF (released 2009 too) is a good one but since there are versions of it, you will just compare it with the Taiwanese and Japanese version, I still love it though.
You’re Beautiful is the best drama if you want to laugh and to hear good songs, and experience the great feeling of LOVE.
If you like romance and comedy drama the n this is the best for you. This drama is basically about about a twin sister who enter a boy band called A.N.JELL replacing her brother. Also you will love the OST of this drama, It’s one of the best K drama OST.
if i would rate this drama i would give it a 100 out of 100
This Drama is for people who like comedy and romance very much. The general idea of the talking about a girl who enter a boy band that called A.N.JELL .Also,This drama have a lot of fantastic OST. It is one of the best sound track of K drama.
First of all, thank you WITHS2 for subbing this drama. It must be quite a challenge to do it so well and yet so fast while juggling your everyday life. You guys made it possible for us to enjoy the drama to the fullest, so thanks… ^^
What was this drama about? “A novice nun impersonating her twin brother to join an idol boy-band group” doesn’t cut it even close. But that was what I read when I first heard of this drama. “It doesn’t seem interesting, and it probably won’t worth my time,” I told myself. What made me decide to give it a chance, was the name Hong Sisters and Jang Geun Suk.
Watching the first episode was the beginning of my “fever”. I only needed one day to finish all the 6 episodes I had downloaded. And like the rest of the crowd, I yearned for Wednesday and Thursday to come sooner so I can watch the next episodes (in fact, my “fever” was so bad that my friends and family knew never to ask me out from Wednesday night to Friday afternoon… lolz…) . Have this ever happened to me before? Not that I remembered.
What I love about it:
-. Hong Sisters are getting better and better with their writing. I love how they turned what had been used to death in so many dramas into something fresh (eg the accidental kiss in 1st ep). And I love how they paced the storyline, and how they mixed laughter and angst (ep 14 is the perfect example of this).
-. The other reason I love this drama is the character. I love the prickly Tae Kyung with a marshmallow-soft center. I love how the naive and warm Mi Nyeo could bring his softness out. I love the fun-loving Jeremy with his chuka party. And Manager Ma never failed to make me laugh with his antics. Who could forget the funtastic President Ahn?
-. Of course, the characters wouldn’t be alive without the actor’s skill. If I had liked Jang Geun Suk in Hong Gil Dong, I loved his portrayal of Tae Kyung much much more. Despite TK’s OCD, quirky nature and flaw, he made this character alive, human, and oh-so-lovable. I can surely say I’m his fan now… ^^
I remembered Park Shin Hye in Stairway to Heaven and Heaven’s Tree. I remembered thinking how this girl could cry. But she showed me another side of her as Go Mi Nam/Nyeo. And I’m looking forward to see other sides of her in her next work.
Lee Hong Ki is another surprise for me. I was ready to box him as a comic character in this drama, someone who is nice to look at but not a stand-out. But he kept jumped out of the box and proved me wrong. (I’m going to keep a lookout for this boy… hope he will surprise me again in his next drama…^^)
I have so many reasons to like this drama, but if I have one small dissatisfaction with this drama, it’s the Shinwoo character. (This is just my opinion… I know so many others like him… ^^) I couldn’t feel for him (okay, maybe I felt a twinge for him in ep 13). I know this is Jung Yong Hwa’s first acting career, so I didn’t expect much from him. But watching the key scenes in this drama (like in ep 15 in Okinawa), there’s always this voice at the back of my mind saying this drama would be so much better and the rivalry between TK and SW would be so much intense if an actor with a stronger acting skill portraying this character. He did better in funny moments though, like the ep 14 parody and ep 13 spaghetti scene.
It all comes down to this: this is THE drama of the year for me. I watched several dramas this year, but this is the one that speaks to me at every level. It was excitement, fun, warmth, angst, laughter, love all wrapped up in one beautiful package. And I, for one, is so glad that I got to join Tae Kyung, Mi Nyeo, Shin Woo, and Jeremy in their journey.
() = my thoughts
MY THOUGHTS ARE ONLY MY WAY OF EXPRESSING HOW EVERYTHING IS TO ME. PLEASE DO NOT FEEL DOWN IF YOU ARE READING MY WAYS OF LOOKING AT THE DRAMA.
You’re Beautiful aka You are Handsome is in fact one of those best drama of 2009 ever since boys over flowers & other hit dramas was done.
The best part of the drama is especially of the made-up male group band including some addicting songs produced for the drama as well.
For me, I would like to recommended this drama for any and mostly teenagers because that in fact that there are some things are obliviously silly things that occurs a lot. Like for example that Park Shin Hye plays the brother & the sister (People would know she is a girl). Another example would be that during in episode 1 already, she sang for the boys to hear if her brother was good at singing (people would already know that she is a girl already by her voice). BUT this is all what makes the storyline and makes the girls go crazy for that “OMG, they didn’t notice anything!!!” thing. ^_^
For the characters of the drama, everything was completely set and all the characters seem fine going and all. I believe that SBS found good/pretty/handsome people for this drama as well. The only character that I think don’t fit for its own is Lee Hong Ki. The fact that… guys, they are not all too childish like that (maybe to girls only), they act more mature most of the time. But all other than that I feel that the rest did very well.
For the plot, I think it is well done and everything good and set. It is really a good, perfect, & new type of fresh smell to look for with new styles. Many teenagers (or maybe for adults as well) will find this drama good. ^_^ The theme of “girl pretending to be a guy” seem to be a really big hit and so I think this drama also made a big hit with along the other dramas before, “Painter of the Wind” & “Coffee Prince” (there might have been more, but I forgot).
Once again, I would really recommended this drama with my rating of 10/10. ^_^ You will LOVE it if you have seen & LOVE those “girl pretending to be a guy” theme. You will want to watch this drama over and over again. I guaranteed it!
THANK YOU FOR READING!
Move over F4, Step right in, A.N JELL!!!
I was really hoping that my love for F4 will last a little bit longer. I still have them in my heart, I still watch them when I’m blue or when I’m having a tough time dealing with issues of the real world. But, I have to be honest to myself. Watching You’re Beautiful, even just reading the recaps, or going through screencaps, makes my heart flutter. I have surely fallen for this drama, or Shin Woo?? Tae Kyung??. It still hasn’t taken City Hall out of my #1 spot, but it certainly overtook my F4.
There’s undeniably a difference in this drama compared to BOF. Setting the usual Kdrama cliché’s on the side. We all know the nicer guy never gets the girl in the end. It’s still a drama worth my time. Aside from the fact that this drama is scripted by the highly acclaimed Hong Sisters (Google it!), everything seemed to have a more natural flow to each episode. There is definitely a balance to each episode. I enjoy the parodies as well.
The actors’ seem to be comfortable with their own character. I haven’t seen anything too overboard. Even the supporting casts have caught my attention. So far, every scene, every action has a certain logic to it, as a whole, it meshed well together – the episodes, the storylines made sense. As for CHEMISTRY – each actor portrayed their emotions at the right place, at the right time. I was weary of Kpop stars switching over to acting, but Lee Hong Ki and UEE, have surprisingly impressed me. It also helped that the actors are also musically inclined. Having that knowledge helped them portray their character even better. Having them participating in the OST helped me in understanding the scene at hand. Hearing their feelings and watching their emotions really covered everything I need to know about how they feel. Which makes my heart ache.
As for the OST, thankfully, it’s not overplayed.
This drama is a fun, friendly, and angst filled series that is worth everyone’s time – every second of it. If you thought you love BOF, watch this drama and prepare to see Jeremy make you laugh, swoon over Shin Woo, whose sensitivity makes you wish you have a man like that, and root for Tae Kyung and Mi Nam/Nyeo who’s slowly learning what LOVE is.
All in all, this drama is BEAUTIFUL!!!
in general i hate long kdramas
but this was the only one that i wished that it was 100 episodes
got attached to it from the 1st episode & i had a feeling that it ‘ll be different
i dare to say that this is the only kdrama ( in my opinion )
that i have never felt it’s boring even a moment while watching it
even the scenes of HTK’s mother or GMN’s aunt
thanks SBS for this drama
and thanks WITHS2 for subbing
I’m not the type of person who’ll comment or post sth but You’re Beautiful captured my heart completely, I couldn’t help commenting on it. The story is as beautiful as its title. The brief summary given out by a very famous source (hint: you always look up for drama info on that website) didn’t do any justification on You’re Beautiful. This is not just another trendy drama, it is THE trendy drama. Actually, when news broke out that Hong sisters will do another drama, I was so interested to watch it but then, when a synopsis of the drama came out before the casting was done and also after the actors were picked, I’d decided to not watched the drama (because of the lame synopsis – not the actors since I love their previous works)…. AND THEN… the trailer came out!! I was literally and metaphorically screamed excitedly=) I knew at that moment that THIS IS IT! I’m going to watch and love You’re Beautiful.
Yeap, the ratings in Korea sucks but try googling it on the Net and you’ll see that this drama receives plenty of love from a lot of people in Korea and all the continents of the world (I’m not exaggerating).
It’s a simple, romantic story, full of cute scenes, adorable characters. If you like to have your heart flutters, this drama is certainly for you. Watch this and you’ll feel that you’re beautiful. (p/s: I love all Hwang Tae Kyung monologues about Go Mi Nam/Nyeo!!!!)
THIS IS MY OPINION AND MY REVIEW. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE IT PERSONALLY AGAINST YOU OR ANY THIRD PARTY. I WELCOME CRITICISMS AND FEEDBACK BUT PLEASE BE POLITE. THANK YOU.
This drama is the best thing since Princess Hours. I do not mean that as a point of comparison in which drama is better, but YB energized and revamped what Korean drama is and should be about. Of course it is about love, friendship and family but it differs on its delivery and execution. First, YB has a very popular premise. In a world of KPop debuts and domination, battling boy and girl bands on every Music Show, being drawn into their lives is like the Korean version of MTV’s Making the Band meets Big Brother with a dash of Notting Hill and America’s Sweethearts.
Second, the characters are endearing and memorable that it is impossible not to love them. All actors are perfectly casted for their roles, giving them more depth. It is like the role was made for them. I do know the Hong Sisters are big Jang Geun Suk fans, so I am not sure how high the possibility of this to be true.
Third, I have always loved a Hong Sister’s drama but never really proclaimed myself as their fan, but this drama did it. YB has a good pace, with unexpected twists from common Kdrama cliches, a LOL comic gags, and of course the gasp-hold-your-breath-shriek-and-squeel-heart-thumping cliffhanger. I think waiting for the next episode in between Friday and Tuesday aged me with anxiety. I might say that they are not subtle most of the time in their writing but they are able to create memorable scenarios and dialogue that will just capture every Kdrama fan.
Lastly, i love YB’s soundtrack. It is not definitely the best one out there, but it fits the drama. Some might grew tired of if due to the different versions of one song, but for me that’s what makes it unique. Each song is tailored to each character and has been perfectly incorporated in the drama. Each song, though a different version, fits the scenario and the “emotion” the PD’s wants to convey to its audience.
YB is a great drama and right now it dethroned Coffee Prince and My Girl as No.1 on my list. However, I am not blind to its flaws nor to its inconsistencies. There are still more things that needs to be explored and left unexplained. The drama has left me with questions about the other characters, and it did not really give the the closure I wanted. I was left with my mouth hanging open at the ending credits in disbelief that it has ended. (LOL same reaction I have when I watched Coffee Prince’s last scene). After recovering from the shock, I was able to process everything and felt happy with it. I was sad it ended because I want more. I sometimes just delude myself that it is the way it is because of a possibility of a Season 2. Haha! Denial is really amazing.
After all is said and done, all good things must come to an end. YB ended fitting with the drama’s theme. It is a fresh, fun and laid back story of their love and lives. I will never forget the crazy days when a thread has over 700 fans online discussing the previous episode or dissecting a 39 minute preview. Nor being one of the fans who contributed to the 1 million views in 1 week and crashed its site including a certain popular blog site. I am happy and proud to be part of the fan frenzied days, and solid mania cult hit that is You’re Beautiful.
Whoaa. “You’re Beautiful” just left me breathless after 16 episodes. It wasn’t anything I imagined. For anyone who’s a drama addict, you know how much predictable dramas can be. But this one is different, it was everything rolled into one, unexpected twists, hilarious humor, romance that gives you knots in stomach (well mine anyways,) and it’s fast paced. Not the ones where it takes 15 episodes of agony and “OMFG, when will HE figure out that…”, and one episode of “awhhhh! so cute!!”-ness
Of course I would recommend this for anyone who’s tired of the same old recycled plot, because this drama have got great directing, dialogues, amazing casts, addicting soundtrack. TRUELY BEAUTIFUL.
Simply put, it’s Coffee Prince(girl pretends to be guy) meets Hanayori Dango(main guy finds it hard to express that he likes the girl while his friend becomes his rival in love).
The only thing that I didn’t like about the drama is that, to express what they feel, they talk to themselves too much.
First of all, I wanted to say thank you very much for your hard work on subbing this drama into English! I started when it was nearly over, but I was hooked right from when I started and couldn’t wait for the last two episodes to be finished.
My friend had told me about the drama at first, however, I’m more into Japanese dramas so I told her I would watch it, yet I kept putting it off. When I started it, I thought I would get bored because I really didn’t know any of the characters, or rather the actors that were in the drama, because I hadn’t watched very many Korean dramas this year and the last Korean drama I had started I couldn’t get through even half of the first episode (Boys Before Flowers, but may give it a try again later)
After the third or fourth episode though I couldn’t stop watching because I had to know what happened, especially between the main characters, Tae Kyung and Go Mi Nam (or rather Nyu). Although the love triangle (square?) between the characters seemed predictable because I’ve seen it in other dramas, the personality of the two kept leaving me wanting the predictable to happen.
Due to episode 9, I went in search for the Pig Rabbit and almost, well I had bought it but canceled because I came to my senses, and was going to purchase it. The last two episodes definitely had me teary-eyed, but I’m sensitive like that. And although the last episode didn’t end quite the way I was hoping for, I thought it was a good enough ending for the drama, as with most people hoping, possibly leaving a chance for a sequel (but what more is there to tell?).
I have already recommended this to many of friends, they’re also more into the Japanese scene, and a few are already thinking of watching it! Definitely 10 out of 10 for me!
